5 Words to describe Roscoe's World.
Adventure
"The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams."
— Oprah Winfrey
Our Story
Hello, Welcome to Roscoe’s World. My name is Joshua Marchant. I am the Creator, Designer, Author, Illustrator, Editor, Filmer, and Voice of Roscoe’s World. Everything you see before you is the culmination of 3 years of work to bring my dream world into reality. The crazy part is that everything you see started by complete accident. I never set out to build all of this; in fact, I didn’t even know what I was doing during that first year. Everything from the first place of interest in Roscoe’s World to the last. The coloring book to an animated series. I made up as I went along. I had no grand plan further than one project to the next. Most of the time, I didn’t even know how to do any of the things I was trying to do for Roscoe’s World. I was completely new to Designing, Writing, Illustrating, Editing, and Filming. I had to teach myself how to do everything. I have no technical background whatsoever. The only things I had in the beginning were imagination and the will to complete each and every project over the last three years. I like to call myself a Creative Designer.
Roscoe’s World is based on the bond I had with my real dog, Roscoe. Roscoe was a Miniature Schnauzer that I got as a birthday gift from my mom. Roscoe was a great dog, lovable and loyal. Always by my side. He helped me through tough times and great times. Roscoe was born with a cyst in his stomach. When he was a puppy, he was too small, and the cyst was in a hard-to-reach place. The vet recommended that I leave it alone, allowing Roscoe to live a normal life, but warned that one day the cyst would grow too large in his stomach, and there would be a very unlikely chance that Roscoe would survive the surgery to remove it. Thirteen years later, that is exactly what happened. The cyst had grown too big, and the surgery to remove it was not an option.
Roscoe died February 25, 2021. I started Roscoe’s World a year later.
Companionship
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."
— Kyra Sundance
Historical
When I first conceived the idea for Rosoce’s World, this project was intended to be a 30-page coloring book. Something I thought would be a great way to remember him. The original idea was to have just Roscoe in different places around the world. After creating the first 15 coloring pages for the coloring book, I felt that the book was feeling a bit bare. There was no life in it; it was just Roscoe at the Pyramids in Egypt or at the Great Wall of China. There was just one problem: I couldn’t draw, so adding different types of dogs in the coloring scenes was going to be very difficult. It was then that the idea of an entire world of alternate versions of my dog, Roscoe, began to form. The second set of 15 Places of interest for the coloring book shifted from Places to People of Interest, including Mayans, Pirates, and Vikings.
"Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present."
— Master Oogway in Kung Fu Panda
Once I had finished the Coloring book. I felt I was not done; I wanted to continue hanging out with my dog. I was reviewing the 30 POIs, and I began to notice a pattern. You can go from Egypt to Rome, and you can go from China to Japan. Once I started to figure out all the different places I could connect to in this new world, I built. I started piecing together a story. A historical adventure story of a boy and his dog. This is when I realized what this was. This is going to be my life’s work. This is how I can continue to see and play with my dog every day. This is Roscoe’s World.
Memory
"Our memory is a more perfect world than the universe: it gives back life to those who no longer exist."
— Guy de Maupassant
Grief
"Grief is like the ocean; it comes in waves. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim."
— Vicki Harrison
Since then, the Idea for Roscoe’s World has expanded way beyond what I ever could have imagined. I now have a coloring book, an activity book, a story that will be told over 8 to 10 volumes, an animated series, hundreds of designs for various products, social media channels featuring behind-the-scenes shows, all connected to my central hub for all things Roscoe. For a normal man with no traditional background in any of the projects I created for this world. I would say I did alright by Roscoe. I was only able to do all of this because of the love I have for my dog. With some imagination and determination, I took a simple, happy accident and let it grow into a great, big, beautiful world. - Joshua Marchant.
